Americans for Prosperity Calls Out Republicans Billy Long and Jo Ann Emerson For Push to Raise Taxes

You might remember Billy Long signing Grover Norquist's plan not to raise taxes. As mentioned last week, it appears Billy Long is getting ready to break his no new taxes pledge. Long along with Jo Ann Emerson are part of 40 Republicans who have called on a Congressional Super Committee to raise taxes.

Now Americans for Prosperity are calling out 100 representatives who agreed to put all new revenue opportunities on the table. I remind you, government doesn't produce revenue through production of products. They do it through taxes. Americans for Prosperity has sent out a letter to its members from Missouri's 7th Congressional District noting Long's new desire to raise taxes.

They write:

A group of 100 U.S. Representatives sent a letter to the so-called Super Committee urging the handpicked group of twelve legislators to consider “all options for mandatory and discretionary spending and revenues” in order to reach the committee’s goal of $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction over the next ten years. In Washington speak, this is code for raising taxes.

Among this list is 40 Republicans whose capitulation encouraging the committee to raise taxes is troubling. We shouldn’t be surprised to see 60 Democrats seizing on the opportunity to drive a wedge between conservatives intent on restoring economic growth by keeping taxes low and Republican lawmakers who are starting to throw in the towel on keeping pressure on Democrats to cut spending.

Your representative was one of the 40, and needs to hear from you TODAY!
Here's the letter Congressman Long and Congressman Emerson signed as they join Democrats ready to raise your taxes:

Dear Congressman Hensarling, Senator Murray, and Members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction,

We write to you as a bipartisan group of representatives from across the political spectrum in the belief that the success of your committee is vital to our country’s future. We know that many in Washington and around the country do not believe we in the Congress and those within your committee can successfully meet this challenge. We believe that we can and we must.

To succeed, all options for mandatory and discretionary spending andrevenues must be on the table. In addition, we know from other bipartisan frameworks that a target of some $4 trillion in deficit reduction is necessary to stabilize our debt as a share of the economy and assure America’s fiscal well-being.
Our country needs our honest, bipartisan judgment and our political courage. Your committee has been given a unique opportunity and authority to act. We are prepared to support you in this effort.
Sincerely,
