David Caruso: No Bumper Crop This Year
After a few weeks of making earnest attempts to catch as many new or nearly new couch potato offerings as possible, our former opinion of tv as 'a vast wasteland' is intact.
Not one of the new shows has managed to grab our attention. "The Good Wife", "NCIS Los Angeles", "Hank" and "Cougar Town" are prime examples of poor imitations, without benefit of any creative spark. The actors on each do fine work, hamstrung by the quick fix, rubber stamp mentality of the networks and producers.
As much as Bochco is not our favorite, for obvious reasons, he hit the ground running with David Caruso's John Kelly in "NYPD Blue". The premiere became, and remains, a highlight for many, even after 15 years. Norman Lear accomplished the same with his Archie Bunker. Likewise, Zuiker with the CSI franchise.
We don't expect every new show to be a blockbuster. However, one or two per season would give us hope there still exists a morsel of imagination within the television community.
Never one to appear completely negative, we admit there is an occasional bright spot. While it has now been renewed for a second full season, so is not technically new, we are becoming attached to "Castle" (damn you, Scott Parker). It's a fast-paced, low-impact dramedy with great cast chemistry and storylines; a little something for everyone. Humor and sarcasm, drama, a dribble of romance. What more could one want?
Due to its unfortunate scheduling, we are forced to view it online or dvr it. We have to admit our dvr is reserved for hockey, specials like "National Parks" or "John Adams", and "CSI Miami". Now we've added "Castle" to the list. The culling process is often painful; which to keep, which to delete. Perhaps it's best there's so few good shows; we'd need another dvr for the overflow.
