Rival late night hosts Jay Leno and David Letterman made a rare appearance together in a much-talked about Super Bowl spot Sunday night. The 15-second spot promoting Late Night with David Letterman featured the two comedians and Oprah Winfrey as a referee.
The ad opens with Dave, who complains that it's the "worst Super Bowl party ever." Oprah tells him to be nice before the camera reveals Jay, who comments, "He's just saying that because I'm here."
Despite the bitter rivalry between Leno and Letterman, it sounds like shooting the ad was surprisingly easy. It was getting Jay and Oprah to New York secretly that was the problem. Rob Burnett, executive producer of Late Night, told the Associated Press that Jay wore a hoodie, dark sunglasses and a fake mustache to get into the Ed Sullivan Theatre, where Late Night is shot.
Burnett said the ad was Letterman's idea and was shot less than a week before the big game. The ad revisits Letterman and Leno's long-time rivalry, but it also sets the stage for a renewed ratings battle between the two as Jay prepares to take back the Tonight show.
