Gary Michael Hilton, now serving a life sentence for killing hiker Meredith Emerson, has 30 days to appeal the ruling by Butts County Superior Court Judge Thomas Wilson.  

One year ago, Meredith Emerson took her dog and went hiking in north Georgia. The dog escaped, but Emerson fell victim to Gary Hilton, who kidnapped and murdered her.  

Friends of Meredith Emerson, a hiker abducted a year ago and murdered, have made sure she will not be forgotten, raising $35,000 for causes important to the 24-year-old University of Georgia graduate.
