Last year portions of Wisconsin were suffused with Hollywood excitement as Michael Mann filmed portions of the John Dillinger biopic Public Enemies around the state. Wisconsinites are anticipating the release of the film for a variety of reasons. Some know people who worked on the production side of the film or have friends who were cast as extras. Others are excited to see a film that partially takes place in the state of Wisconsin and was actually shot in the state. Of course, many of us were simply starstruck because some of our favorite actors are in the film and, during filming, stepped foot where we regularly walk. So how does the film hold up? Rex Reed has the first review on the New York Observer website and proclaims: "Thrilling, glamorous, richly textured and breathlessly action-packed, it is one of the best movies of the year." I won't post anything else from the review, because he does reveal a number of spoilers for those who aren't familiar with the history of John Dillinger. Todd McCarthy writing for Variety wasn't quite as forgiving to the filmmakers choice to use digital, but he does note: "Other production qualities are exceptional across the board, and extensive location work in Illinois and Wisconsin pays off in physical authenticity." Essentially, Wisconsin, this sounds like a movie you can justifiably be excited about (no matter what David Medaris thinks).
