Call this a shameless attempt to get people to this blog, but this happened to me last night and it’s too good of an anecdote not to share. I cut and pasted what I wrote from another website, but the anecdote is mine.
| First off, I work in an office on Robertson Boulevard. Paparazzi haunt the sidewalk outside, just on the off chance that somebody famous decides to have lunch there. We have celebrity sightings all the time, and usually nobody reacts much. But today someone came in reporting that Britney was downstairs shopping at Paige, a denim store on the ground floor of the building, and we all tried to look out the window but couldn’t see anything.I’m walking out of the office tonight, and I see, outside the shop, a cluster of paps pushed up against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Paige. So…she’s obviously still there. As I get closer, I see that the windows have been completely papered, top to bottom, so you can’t see inside. Paps are pressed up to the window, trying to get a shot of her between the papers, saying “I see her, I see her.”I give them a wide berth because those guys are CRAZY and will run you over in a heartbeat. Everyone in my office has had the experience of accidentally getting in the way when, say, Lauren Conrad was walking to her car, and being crushed by 20 cameramen. But the path to my parking lot takes me directly in front of the store.
I walk past the front of the store, I see people lined up 5-6 deep waiting for her to come out. Tourists, paps, people leaving work, salesladies at other stores, I mean, EVERYONE. I hear someone yell “Here she comes, here she comes!” All hell breaks loose. There’s a mad stampede as the 20-something paps who were pressed up against the side wall now come rushing around to the front, knocking people over in the process. Camera flashes going off everywhere. People are just standing around gaping, so I felt like at this point I might as well join them long enough to see her come out–at this point I’d been hanging around long enough at it was. So she finally comes out, and she was 10 people deep at least but I was standing up on a step so I could see the top of her head–enough to see that she had her hair in a bun and was in her standard crap-ass messy no-style. She had her head down and kept walking, without stopping or talking from what I could see. She looked very small. And people were just going apeshit. I heard a little girl screaming, “I see her, I see her!” A girl behind me just kept repeating, “God.” Cops swarm in from the sidewalk, screaming, “Get back, get back, make a hole, make a hole. Get off the sidewalk.” Of course you could barely hear them above that constant cry of “Britney!Britney!Britney!Britney!Britney!” A big black SUV screeches up, driven by what looked like a young white dude, I couldn’t recognize him. But they shoved Britney into the car and it sped off down Robertson at top speed accompanied by cop cars. After she left, the scene dispersed but the mania lasted. Two young girls kept gasping, “I can’t believe I saw her!” The paps were comparing shots–one was bragging about how he got a “full shot” which he would then be able to sell for more. I wanted to ask them how much they think he could make for a photo of Britney existing a clothing store, but wussed out. As people began to walk away, one man with a camera threw his hands up and screamed, “I fucking love my job!!” Final note–I wound up in this photo somewhere. |
