Its capital is Pyongyang. Its northern border is shared mainly with China. Russia shares an 18.3 km border along the Tumen River in the far northeast corner of the country. To the south, it is bordered by South Korea, with which it formed one territorial unit known as Korea until 1945, when the country was divided into two separate states following World War II.
