Whatever Happened to Baby Olivia and Joan? - The Legendary Sibling Rivalry Between Screen Legends Olivia de Haviland and Joan Fontaine
Written by Adrian Twist -
It never fails, when the death of a former screen legend
becomes news, people wonder whatever happened to them since their glory
days. Never mind that everyone moves on to the current crop of
scandals and headliners and completely forget about faded stars. Let's
take notice of the following Hollywood legends before it's too late... [Pictured: Olivia de Havilland (L) and Joan Fontaine]
Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine are not yet dead, but they are 92 and 90 years old, respectively - so they're pretty close. They are also sisters who haven't spoken since 1975. Are they an example of life imitating Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? That's the movie where real-life rivals Bette Davis and Joan Crawford played sisters and former Hollywood stars with a mutual deep-seeded resentment stemming from childhood jealousy.
Olivia and Joan's (Fontaine) rivalry was first sensationalized in 1940 when both vied for the title role in Alfred Hitchcock's, Rebecca. It went to Joan, resulting in an Oscar nomination. Their second public bout came a couple years later when both were up for "Best Actress" in the same year - Joan won again. Olivia eventually won her first of two Oscars in 1946. [More juicy details after jump...]
But the resentment wasn't one-sided, Joan detested her older sister since childhood. Olivia would intentionally rip up the clothes intended as hand-me-downs, forcing Joan to stitch up the rags. She also claims her mother was against her following in Olivia's acting footsteps and made her change her name from de Havilland; hence, Fontaine was born. But the final straw came in 1975 when she wasn't informed of their mother's memorial. Olivia claims she told her, but was blown off.
These days, Olivia lives in Paris, France and Joan lives in relative seclusion in Carmel, California. Could their rivalry have extended to a competition to outlive each other? It would be so great to see them make a public reconciliation in one of the upcoming Oscars ceremonies. They're legendary Hollywood sisters who accomplished so much in a brutal town. The time to forgive and forget is way past due. Don't die bitter, ladies!
