Paedophile Derek Hindmarch lured girls by calling public phone boxes

A man who used public phone boxes to groom young girls and persuade them to perform sexual acts has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Derek Hindmarch, 46, from Humberside would lie in wait near telephone boxes and choose a victim from among the girls who walked near by. When they reached the phone box he would attract their attention by ringing the telephone.
Once he had established contact with the girl he would begin grooming them and encourage them to create indecent images of themselves.
His approach was “methodical and predatory” officers in charge of the case said today.
Hindmarch had at least 20 victims all under 16 and pleaded guilty to 35 charges including 20 counts of causing or inciting a child following sexual grooming and 13 counts of making indecent photographs of children.
He was caught after a tip-off from a member of the public and a lengthy investigation.
Many more victims are expected to come forward following the sentence.
Hindmarch is believed to have operated in many locations around the UK including Cleethorpes, Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Hull and Leicester.
Andy Wells, Deputy Head of Child Exploitation and Online Protection Operations said: “Time and again we are seeing offenders trying to mask their tracks in order to sexually abuse children.
“Like Hindmarch, offenders are increasingly finding out that, despite their efforts, we will track them down using whatever methods possible and hold them to account.”
Superintendent Lauren Poultney added: “This was a complex and sensitive enquiry into the activities of a serial sexual offender.
“There is no doubt that Hindmarch posed a significant risk to children across the country; his abuse was both methodical and predatory and its impact will undoubtedly remain with his victims and their families for a long time.”
Barbara Petchey, Chief Crown Prosecutor said; “Not only has Hindmarch been sentenced to twelve years imprisonment, he will also be on the Sex Offender’s Register for life.”
