The legendary producer will be meeting with a host of music stars in Los Angeles at the start of next week to re-interpret the 1985 track to raise money for the victims of the Haiti earthquakes.

Quincy said: “It's the 25th anniversary and it's perfect timing. It's not an accident, man. That's God. It will be 'We Are the World' for Haiti."

Lionel Richie – who co-wrote the song with the late Michael Jackson – will feature on the new version, while Usher, John Legend, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Will Smith, Sheryl Crow and Natalie Cole are all rumoured to be taking part.

While Quincy, 76, would not confirm the final line-up, he did say: “We've just got to make sure we've got who we got.”

The original single was the brainchild of Quincy, Lionel and Michael and featured a host of world famous performers, including Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper and Billy Joel.

It was released to raise money for famine relief in Africa.
