Tamzin Outhwaite:‘I didn’t really enjoy being pregnant'

Actress Tamzin Outhwaite, 38, on life as a new mum to four-month-old Florence, why she always knew she’d find true love in the end, and how pregnancy wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be...
We are so over celebrity mums parading down the red carpet in a size 6 body-con dress 30 seconds after giving birth. So we’re pleased to hear Tamzin Outhwaite, sexy leading lady and new mum to Florence Elsie, who was born in June, did not lose 2 stone overnight, having refused to embark on the usual immediate punishing exercise regime and living-off-four-raisins-a-day diet.
‘I did no exercise when I was pregnant and ate totally what I wanted. I put on loads of weight everywhere. My behind was huge!’ says Tamzin, 37. ‘I knew I wasn’t going to be the sort of person who sprang back into shape overnight. When you get to your late 30s, it’s natural that it’s going to take longer. For the first two months after giving birth I did nothing at all. My arms started getting back to normal, but the pregnancy belly didn’t go. It’s tougher to lose than if you’d put on weight normally. Before, I’d go to the gym a few times and start to feel my old form come back and my muscles build up.’Indeed, four months after baby arrived, Tamzin is now looking svelte, not to mention unreasonably fresh-faced for one who spends her days knee-deep in nappies.
‘I’m absolutely loving being a mum. But I’m feeling guilty that it’s not as difficult as I thought it would be. Everyone kept telling me, “It’ll be the biggest shock, you’ll never have a night’s sleep again, your relationship will change”’. It does, it all changes, but I keep a sense of humour about it. We’ve been lucky enough to take four months off to hang out with her. And I’ve wanted to be a mum for a long time, so I’d feel guilty for moaning.’
Of course it all helps that Florence, whose dad is actor Tom Ellis, is not in need of Supernanny’s naughty step.
‘Everything’s changed but, at the same time, nothing has – it’s like she’s always been there. She’s so easy. I imagine if she was a stressful baby it’d be different, but she’s good so far.’
Ex-EastEnders star Tamzin is clearly in her element as Mum – but she admits the bit before it wasn’t plain-sailing.
‘I didn’t really enjoy being pregnant. I was hoping I’d be this earth mother type, but I didn’t feel like that at all,’ she admits. One thing that didn’t worry her though, was not feeling sexy or attractive. ‘I’m lucky I have a man who isn’t shallow about that stuff.’
