The Tony Bernazard Coverage is probably already reaching the saturation point, but the quote that bothers me is the one from an “unnamed veteran starter”. He (Bernazard) is having a cancerous effect on the Mets’ clubhouse” was reported to Bart Hubbuch of the NY Post. What more proof does Omar Minaya need to understand this guy is destroying his team right in front of him?
All you heard in 2006 was how great the Mets clubhouse was. Winning the division going away always helps that, but slowy this has changed each season. There are cliques, tension, and backstabbing. You continue to hear about friction between the Latino players and others from the major league level on down. I was no fan of Willie Randolph, but perhaps some of his paranoia was a result of the constant fear that Bernazard was undermining him with his players. If a veteran player is saying these things than you need to take it seriously.
It’s not like we are talking about a valuable member of the front office. I talked to someone who follows the minor league system and he basically said that one of the reasons the farm system is “atrocious” is because of him. Maybe Carlos Delgado was right when he called him the “highest paid translator in baseball”.
Of course, being friendly with Jeff Wilpon doesn’t hurt at all. Tony Bernazard isn’t stupid and clearly knows how to play politics in baseball. Remember, it often is who you know, not what you know, that garners you favor in business. Baseball not only subscribes to that rule, but embraces it wholeheartedly. The Mets have already lost their clubhouse, but keeping Bernazard might seal that deal for good.
