Yuri Gagarin was the first human in space. He is a Soviet hero and national figure, and his name reminds us of the potential of human space travel and exploration. Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space and the first human to orbit the Earth in 1961.

Women performed just as well as men in NASA astronaut training in the 1950s. So what if an American woman had been the first person in space? Because, as discovered here, the Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova went airborne in June 1963. Her fellow countryman Yuri Gagarin beat her by a little more than two years, and Gagarin beat American astronaut Alan Shepard by a few weeks.
