News, sports videos driving hits at Miami Herald

Here’s my second tidbit of the week, drawn from the Yahoo NewspaperVideo Group. Someone asked whether other newspapers had scaled back their video offerings. Chuck Fadely talked about what he and his colleagues have done at the Miami Herald:

Hard news and sports drive our video traffic. We’ve abandoned the feel-good features that used to be the newspaper stock-in-trade.

Never in a million years did I expect (or want) to be emulating TV, but that’s what we’re doing and that’s what works to get traffic. Depressing but whatever keeps us alive at this point is good with me. We even have our own mult box which makes us popular in pool situations.

This sounds similar to experiments I tried at the Express-News to bump our video hits. I left the paper too soon to find the answer, but perhaps Chuck’s insight provides a glimmer of what would have happened had I finished the experiment.

What about you and your newspaper?
