Staff Sgt. Robert Thomas of New Burgh, Indiana of the 3-89 Cavalry Regiment of the 10th Mountain Division surveys the surrounding area from the roof of a  bombed out former shopping mall in east Baghdad May 11, 2008 in Baghdad, Iraq.  The mall has been long since looted and is flooded by ten feet of brackish algae-slimed water, but the building affords a commanding view of the surrounding neighborhood, and the soldiers climbed to its crumbling roof to make sure it's not being used by insurgents.
