Saving Children's Lives One Heart At A Time(Bahija)

Iraqi Kurdish mother Bahija cries out God's praises alongside Israeli pediatric cardiologist Dr. Lior Sasson as she sees her son Kirwan, aged 11, moments after he came out of emergency surgery to repair a hole in his heart at the Wolfson Medical Center October 15, 2007 in Holon, near Tel Aviv. Kirwan, from northern Iraq, is one of dozens of Iraqi children who have been rushed to Israel this year for life-saving heart surgery organized by the Christian Shevet Achim group and the Israeli-based organization 'Save A Child's Heart'. Since it was founded in 1996, 'Save A Child's Heart' has treated more than 1,700 children from 28 countries around the world bringing most of them to Israel for their surgery.

Kirwan, an 11-year-old Kurdish boy from northern Iraq, and his mother Bahija make a pilgrimage to the Temple Mount, with its golden Dome of the Rock Islamic Shrine, before leaving Israel on their long journey back home following his successful heart surgery the previous month, on November 14, 2007 in Jerusalem. In the five weeks since Kirwan left his home in Iraq, barely able to walk or breathe and having been given just weeks to live, the once frightened young boy is now growing stronger daily thanks to the Christian aid group Shevet Achim who sponsored his journey and the Israeli-based organization 'Save A Child's Heart'.
