Prince Edward Island Mussels Harvested For U.S. Consumption
Neal Elsworth places socks loaded with mussels into a bin after retrieving them through the ice for the Confederation Cove Mussel co. March 25, 2008 in New London Bay, Prince Edward Island, Canada. The cultured mussels are grown in mesh stockings that are suspended from ropes in the water. These ropes are anchored at the bottom and suspended from a buoy. During the winter months Confederation Cove Mussel co. cuts through the ice to retrieve the mussels. Prince Edward Island produces 80 percent of North America's cultured mussels.
