Twice a year HRC hosts lobby day, and last week members from across the country went to “The Hill” and lobbied their legislators. HRC had over 155 people attend from over 23 states, and we held 187 meetings to discuss LGBT legislation. While our members were on the hill, the House of Representatives passed the conference report for the FY 2010 Defense Authorization bill by a vote of 281 to 146, bringing critical hate crimes protections closer to becoming law than ever before. Many of our members were literally in the middle of meetings with their legislators when yesterday’s vote happened. My first meeting ... Read Full Story

8.18.2009 Masterful! In his visit to today's Morning Joe, Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY) made the single most effective case for a true public option -- leaving wingnutty Scarborough blabbering like an idiot. Weiner immediately cut to the chase, offered a stunningly simple yet elegant policy alternative, made the political and economic case for it, and gave the enemies of reform no day light. Beautiful! Part 1: Insurance Companies charge 30% overhead yet provide not one single health service. Medicare's overhead is just 4% and seniors love it! Part 2: "Insurance companies take a piece of the action on every transaction between you and your ... Read Full Story

by Kristin Schall A Socialist WebZine Exclusive! At least there was a little good news at the August 31st healthcare town hall meeting in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. No death panels under the proposed Obama healthcare reform. But the good news ended quickly. Town hall meetings are supposed to offer people a voice , a chance to participate in the often distant democratic process. No such luck at Congresswoman Yvette Clark’s (D) town hall. Index cards were substituted for democratic debate. Attendees were asked to write their comments on cards and turn them in to ushers. This allowed the Congresswoman to avoid the kinds of ... Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) had an epiphany about health care legislation while he attended a "luncheon" at "Enchilada's Mexican restaurant" with some senior citizens on Hilton Head island. They helped him come to the conclusion that if the Democrats in the House are so enthusiastic about passing a public option, surely they would be rushing to join said plan. And they aren't, so there must be something bad about it. However, the...

Manned up? So is the White House saying that Weiner is acting like a woman or a gay? And which one does our White House find worse? On the day after a huge civil rights defeat for the gay and lesbian Americans, in a battle in which we were abandoned by President Obama and the Democratic National Committee, it's telling that the White House is using effeminate slurs to defame Democrats who question why the President didn't bother lifting a...
